2014 Honda CB1100 EX Unveiled

When Honda announced its release of an update to the  2014 CB1100, there was also mention of a certain new variant to the bike called the CB1100 EX. News regarding both was disclosed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show but there is still no word as to when or if the bike will make it to Indian shores.

At first glance, it is tough to tell the CB1100 and its special variant apart, as the external differences are not that apparent. Just as the CB1100, the CB1100 EX too carries on Honda’s legacy with the CB line of bikes, which includes the CB500 Four, CB900F, and CB750F. Your first clue if you are trying to tell them apart is the  4-2-2 exhaust system which has a silencer on its right side, which are both 1.6 inches inches shorter than the single exhaust on the CB1100. The EX also sports wire spoke aluminium rim wheels as opposed to the cast aluminium wheels on the CB1100.

The EX, with a kerb weight of about 573 pounds, is the heavier of the two by 26.7 pounds, due to which its fuel efficiency is compromised. Honda’s figures stated that the CB1100 EX can go 42.1 miles to the gallon whereas its standard version can go 1.4 miles further on the same amount of fuel. But it is the EX that has the bigger tank, with a capacity 0.8 gallons higher than the CB1100. As far as distance that can be covered on a full tank, the CB1100 can go 167.8 miles whereas the EX can go 194.6.
They both have the 1140 cc displacement Inline-Four mill and stell double cradle skeleton in common. The EX also borrows the Cb1100’s six speed gearbox, new headlights and reworked instrument cluster with gear indicators and fuel usage display.

The suspension system on both bikes is quite similar, too. They sport 41mm forks with twin shocks in the rear, which have adjustable spring preload. ABS comes as a standard feature on both variants and uses four-piston Nissin callipers and 296mm twin discs in front and in the rear is a 256mm disc and single piston calliper.

As far as the looks of the bikes go, they’ve stayed true to their antecedents and even managed to take the same aesthetics up a notch. The CB series is known for its vintage looks and its ability to perform without being effusive or extravagant. Like the classic bikes from the line, the bike has high-set rear view mirrors which have a glossy surface on the back. The fuel tank has a beautiful downward swoop towards where it meets the seat. The perfectly round, simply done headlights and two-pronged cluster in front are trademark CB series stuff. There is no word as yet but this does seem like a bike that will do very well if it does enter the Indian market.
